Studio founder, design legend, unrelenting inspiration, Walter Herbst turned 85 this summer and he and Design Director son Scot marked the occasion by indulging a slight water obsession and completing the end of an epic 5000 mile father-son journey by boat from the Great Lakes to FL…and back!
They caught up with design story-teller Angela Yeh for a unique WFB (‘Work From Boat’) podcast as they rolled into New York Harbor after a grueling sprint up the North Atlantic.

Cue Health (Nasdaq: HLTH), a healthcare technology company, teamed up with award-winning actor and producer Gal Gadot to bring Cue - the new, essential smart device for your health - to life in its inaugural Super Bowl® commercial on Sunday, February 13, 2022. In the new spot, Cue joins the other smart devices in the home and showcases her differentiated capabilities as the newcomer whose job is to protect the family’s most valuable asset: their health.
“This Super Bowl Sunday, I’m excited to introduce more people to Cue, an empowering smart device for your health that gives me hope for a healthier future,” said Gal Gadot.
“Cue’s mission has always been to empower people to live their healthiest lives,” said Ayub Khattak, Chief Executive Officer of Cue Health. “Together with the one and only Gal Gadot, Cue comes to life on one of the world’s biggest stages as the heroic, essential smart device that people can rely on to manage their own health and the health of their families.”
Cue’s molecular test is the most accurate at-home test for COVID-19*, delivering results to a mobile smart device in 20 minutes using the Cue Health App. Cue’s test cartridges and components are proudly made in the USA. Cue+TM members can connect with a physician through 24/7 in-app virtual care to get the answers they are seeking about their test results and other health concerns. Looking ahead, Cue is poised to usher in the digital transformation of personalized healthcare with new diagnostic tests - including for respiratory illnesses, sexual diseases, cardiometabolic health, and more - all of which will be compatible with the powerful, connected Cue Reader.
Cue has been working with Herbst since the company’s found a decade ago, with Herbst responsible for ID, user experience and hardware design strategy. Learn more about Cue and their newly available consumer products at Cuehealth.com

The award-winning Pattern clinical diagnostic system designed by Herbst has been granted Breakthrough Device Designation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its Pneumonia Action Panel. The test uses Pattern’s Digital CultureTM technology to provide a fast and comprehensive diagnosis for patients hospitalized with severe pneumonia. Digital CultureTM combines machine learning and single cell analysis to provide pathogen identification (ID) and phenotypic antibiotic susceptibility (AST) information an order of magnitude faster than current tests.
The FDA Breakthrough Device Program helps patients receive more timely access to breakthrough technologies that have the potential to provide more effective treatment or diagnosis for life-threatening diseases. Submissions for devices designated as Breakthrough Devices receive priority review, meaning that they are placed at the top of the appropriate review queue and receive additional review resources, as needed. Under the program, the FDA will also provide Pattern with interactive communication regarding device development, clinical study design and other pre-submission topics.
Bacterial pneumonia is the leading cause of sepsis, and lower respiratory infections kill more people annually than any other infectious disease. With the SARS-CoV-2 virus now expected to remain in circulation after the pandemic, the need for rapid comprehensive testing in hospitalized patients is becoming more urgent.
There are an estimated 160,000 pneumo-sepsis deaths per year in the United States.1 Studies show that critically ill pneumonia patients experience treatment failure 20-25% of the time, resulting in significantly higher morbidity and mortality. Early and effective antibiotic treatment is vital for these patients,2, 3 but current tests take days to provide conclusive diagnosis of antibiotic resistance. Pattern’s test can provide a definitive diagnosis within hours, allowing clinicians to optimize antibiotics quickly to ensure effective treatment, prevent side effects, and reduce healthcare costs.
In 2018 Herbst helped name and rebrand the company Pattern Bio, and has since been leading their device ID along with user experience, software UI, web and packaging.

Herbst designed the Cue, which is officially is the first to offer molecular diagnostic Covid-19 testing to consumers in the U.S. without a prescription. “This is the first molecular diagnostic test available without a prescription. For the first time, consumers can access laboratory-grade testing at home. This is an important milestone in the advancement of COVID-19 testing,” said Ayub Khattak, Co-Founder and CEO of Cue. “With this FDA authorization, we are one step closer to achieving our mission of making molecular diagnostic testing available to anyone, anywhere, at any time through a connected healthcare delivery ecosystem. Our guiding principle has been to revolutionize diagnostics to transform health outcomes and we are so proud to lead this transformative paradigm shift in the U.S. healthcare system.”

Huge congrats to our team and wonderful partners for earning a trifecta of coveted Edison Awards this year. We’re very proud of the work we’re doing and thankful for the terrific collaboration with Somwear, WeBoost and Ontera who have brought their innovative vision to life.
Somewear won for their off-grid satellite enabled communication and tracking device, led by James and Alan who continue to knock us out with their impactful government and military partnerships.
WeBoost won for their powerful and home friendly cell boosting technology which is more important then ever for those working remotely and from home. Congrats Josh, Bruce and the entire WeBoost and Wilson teams!
Ontera won for their agricultural DNA diagnostic technology, a big mission with a truly global impact. Big congrats to Bill, Murielle and the entire team here in Santa Cruz! Herbst did all of the ID, naming and brand development work.
Being recognized with an Edison Award has become one of the highest accolades a company can receive in the name of innovation and business. The awards are named after Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931) whose inventions, new product development methods and innovative achievements that changed the world, garnered him 1,093 U.S. patents and made him a household name around the world.
The ballot of nominees for the Edison Awards was judged by a panel of more than 3,000 leading design and business executives including past award winners, academics and leaders in the fields of product development, design, engineering, science and medical.

Herbst designed the Cue Health Monitoring System which enables a range of in-home and in-clinic diagnostics. The system uses a highly portable reader system to test clinical samples in a disposable test cartridge and sends the results to a connected mobile application.
Cue has just been awarded a $13 million contract to accelerate the development, validation and FDA clearance of their test capable of detecting SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, in less than 25 minutes using a simple nasal swab. The test is part of the Cue Health Monitoring System, which is designed to be a portable device that can perform a molecular test and connect patients to a mobile health platform that features interventional components such as telemedicine consultations.
The funding was awarded by BARDA, part of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The funding will enable Cue to accelerate the development and validation of its molecular COVID-19 test, paving the way for its scale-up to facilitate on-the-ground management of this pandemic cycle and prepare for similar infectious disease outbreaks in the future.
“We aim to help provide a diagnostic shield for people at home, their business, and the healthcare system that will allow us to gain the upper hand against viral threats now and in the future.” said Ayub Khattak, CEO of Cue Health. “We have worked with the BARDA team for the past two years developing and testing a 20-minute, molecular influenza test designed for home and point-of-care use. Our connected platform could serve as a critical tool in identifying the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Rather than waiting days for results or sending samples off to a lab, having test results in 25 minutes could drastically improve our ability to contain the spread of the virus for this and future pandemics.”
We’re very very proud of Ayub and Clint and the team at Cue….all those years of hard work are starting to really make an important impact!!!
