Self-Cleaning Marine Cameras

FATHOM UNDERWATER CAMERAS
Industrial Design / Branding and Identity
OPPORTUNITY
The future of our vast marine environment depends on our capacity to monitor underwater ecosystems and to generate a real-time picture of aquatic health. Yet the continuous imaging of a coral reef or an ocean habitat requires camera equipment that can withstand the rigors of indefinite salt-water immersion in some of the harshest conditions. Once installed, a camera needs to monitor around-the-clock to detect and capture the elusive and relevant data so that we can shed light on this hidden world.
INSIGHT
2 BIG Problems to solve:
Micro-organisms such as algae grow—-quickly!—-on anything submerged in the water. If we drop a camera in 20’ of warm ocean water it will be covered in slime in a matter of days.
Even if we can manage a continuously clean visual of the underwater world we NOW need to monitor an immense amount of information to capture any concrete data. A task overwhelming for any human alone.
Is there a hardware system capable of cleaning itself, all day—-every day?
Can we embed an AI software platform to LOOK specifically for the species or underwater activity we need to find?
DESIGN STRATEGY
Fathom Ocean worked with Herbst to develop a system of secure and resilient underwater observatories to protect our oceans and infrastructure. Fathom utilizes an AI-powered solution to monitor the underwater landscape with real-time analysis of live-stream video, audio and sensor data…all delivered through a secure app.
Our cameras utilize custom designed sealed-glass observatory domes that encapsulate articulating omnidirectional cameras to relay real-time hi-resolution video to the Fathom app. The system uses an automated intermittent rotational wiper to pass over the glass and camera lens ensuring a clean, clear view into the blue.
All of our systems are powered by Periscope, our AI-powered monitoring app delivers continuous monitoring, targeted data collection, motion detection, species and object ID and smart alerts for actionable results.
These award-winning, self-cleaning underwater monitoring systems are used by researchers, educational organizations and businesses. Every day, millions of viewers enjoy live-stream action from our observatories in oceans around the world
